I was watching CSPAN tonight.
zzzzzzzzzzzzz….
No, really…it was interesting.
They had on, a series of commencement speeches.
This one I found interesting….
It was given by Jeffrey Immelt…CEO of General Electric,
to the 2007 graduates of the University of Notre Dame.

And the part I liked were his following lines:
“First, live with passion. Passion connects the mind with the heart.”
“Second, live with purpose. Purpose turns passion into reality.”
“Distinguish yourself through your determination. Commit yourself to build competency. Have a purpose to your life. You will define your own goals. Work hard and live your dreams.”

fear doesn’t ever make a person more passionate…
it makes a person more desperate to feel passion.

by Thomas Moore…
“Soul is not a thing, but a quality or a dimension of experiencing life and ourselves. It has to do with depth, value, relatedness, heart, and personal substance.” pg. 5
“Love of a new image of self leads to new knowledge about oneself and one’s potential.” pg. 63
How true! How true!
How often do I see this image of myself in the eyes of somebody who loves me for who I am…
and can see in me, something that I have never seen before in myself!?
But it has “soul”….it has quality…yes, it has value, relatedness, heart and personal substance.

“With” means otherliness.
Eros is a connection “with” Another;
it requires the presence
and the participation of Another.
Which is why fantasy
is not eros.
Fantasy can be shared separately,
but it is not real.
Eros requires faith though;
not fantasy.
Faith is first a longing
to be with each other.
And Faith is about
what we do “with” each other…
and not about
what we do “for” each other…
(which is what hope is about).
Faith is the substance
of things hoped “for.”
Love encompasses both faith and hope.
Eros is the “moving force”
for the expression of our faith.
Eros ties the spiritual with the sexual:
our hearts and our souls,
our bodies and our spirits.
